Ask Collaborate Engage Focus

“We succeed where our passions lie.”  An avid believer in this adage and as President since 1990, Paul leads the company in just this way. He is passionate about living the basic fundamentals of the human spirit – integrity, honesty and patience.  He’s equally passionate about carrying these qualities throughout our corporate culture, and you see it in the steady growth of our project type, quality and variety.  Clients trust him with their most challenging projects, knowing they’re in good hands.  Humbling as that compliment is to him, Paul is inspired by leading by example for the rest of the firm.  It’s his passion, pure and simple.  He’s had plenty of opportunities to lead by example outside of the office as well with four children, three grandsons and twin grandchildren on the way. He and his wife look forward to the summer when they will all be moved back to Michigan.

Leading the Mechanical Engineers for the past 24 years, Dave is both a Department Director and an active Principal with responsibilities for major healthcare and university clients.  You’d be correct if you think that his love of detail crosses all aspects of his life. During working hours, between having a deep pulse of the quality of our Mechanical Engineering product, and collaborating with other discipline teams to support an integrated solution, Dave also approaches design of our building systems with a clean slate.  He understands the role that the newest technologies are playing in today’s equipment and he loves thinking outside the box for meaningful solutions.  Outside of work, he loves a variety of home renovation projects – it’s that detail again.  You can also usually find him at his lake house, relaxing on his pontoon boat with his family.

Growing up through the ranks, as Mike’s Army father would say, gave him the best education of how to run a successful business.  He’s worked almost every aspect of our business model over the past 30 years and, as Director of Electrical Engineering and Technology, continues his educational career but now as a leader and a mentor.  His philosophy that every job has the opportunity to be unique has become a bridge between the architectural and engineering designs of our projects, fitting the pieces together to come up with different and creative solutions.  He loves a complex challenge and gets excited about innovation to help solve it. Speaking of challenges, Mike trains two to three days a week with his Karate instructor when he isn’t training for a marathon.  He has in two words, an ‘indomitable spirit’.

David’s love of architecture and engineering began in 7th grade when his class designed and constructed a 180 foot long, 18 foot tall pedestrian bridge out of recycled telephone poles that linked two adjacent school buildings.  Following a traditional path to licensure, David enrolled in all of the drafting classes his high school had to offer and moved on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Lawrence Technological University.  David’s passion for healthcare design and construction was born during his two years living and working in Chicago.  He brought that passion and experience to IDS when he returned to his hometown of Royal Oak to marry his true love.  David lives by the creed, “anything worth doing is worth doing right” and demonstrates this in all aspects of his life – from his meticulous approach to his projects to his commitment to his wife Michelle and his children Isobel and Benjamin.  In his free time, David volunteers his knowledge of design and construction with the Finance Council and Building and Grounds committee at St. Mary’s Royal Oak.  Having a strong interest in the technical aspects of architecture has made David a valuable Construction Administrator and effective Manager of projects which are rooted in the technical side of design.

Ask Listen Inspire

Growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Brandon’s love of architecture and observation began at the early age of 7. He drew from the natural environment of his surroundings as his mother helped him realize a sense of place and the importance its affects have on people and memory. Being mindful of the environment and cultivating meaningful relationships has been and continues to be a life goal. Brandon cherishes the happiness witnessed when people first occupy the spaces his teams create. Brandon strives to bridge people with the practice of architecture and engineering, IDS allows for this endeavor on a daily basis. As Director of Architecture, he is drawn by the importance of the process of architecture and the orchestration of the various roles people play within the process. Brandon has taken on many roles in the last 25 years, from the early years of working in his uncles A/E firm, side by side with his grandfather in the print room, to the more current roles including surveyor, designer, lead technical architect, manager and assistant director. Brandon enjoys spending time with family, his wife and two boys. He has a tremendous love for music and sports. Notably, he was honored with the iconic Eisner Prize at the University of California, Berkeley.

Mike has enjoyed working hard but also finding time to enjoy multiple activities from playing hockey to golf to running marathons all requiring discipline. He uses this same disciplinary approach to the tasks involved in completing a project. Mike has always had an eye for details regardless of the task he enjoys the thought and discovery process, seeing the effort pay off with a successful project completion.  Over the years Mike has taken these discoveries and details and turned them into standards for his everyday practice in the field.  He enjoys the design process and technical challenges each project brings, large and small.  His approach is simple, “slow it down” this will allow the i’s to be dotted and t’s to be crossed.

Dave has worked on a diversity of project types and he enjoys the unique challenges, qualities, and potential opportunities of each one. With each project there is a need to listen and understand what drives the need for a change and its distinct set of goals.  He knows that with that deep understanding and the chemistry and collaboration of the full project team, a designed solution will emerge that eminently impacts and improves the experiences of everyone coming to live, learn, work, recreate, research, be entertained, or just passively walk by.  He enjoys the journey to get to that solution and the personal reward in designing places that enhance the community.

When not at work, you’ll find Dave bringing life into balance while riding his bike halfway between the equator and North Pole along the 45th parallel with a camera in his hand.
